BEIJING - The Chinese government is angry at the US government's decision to impose its biggest sanctions on North Korea and a number of foreign entities accused of doing business with Pyongyang.
Beijing urged Washington to immediately stop such unilateral sanctions. The reason, the sanctions will destroy bilateral cooperation in the Korean peninsula.
Beijing's outrage is also due to a number of Chinese business entities in the latest US sanctions list.
"The Chinese side is firmly opposed to the United States imposing unilateral sanctions and 'long-term jurisdiction' on Chinese entities or individuals in accordance with its national law," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement quoted from its official website on Sunday (25/2/2018) .
"We have filed strong statements with the US on this matter, urging him to immediately stop the error so as not to damage bilateral cooperation in the relevant areas," the ministry continued. "Beijing has comprehensively and strictly implemented UN Security Council resolutions against North Korea and fulfilled its international obligations," the Foreign Ministry added.
"Never allow Chinese citizens or companies to engage in activities that violate the resolution.
" Beijing has long opposed sanctions imposed on North Korea as long as it is not within the UN framework.
As reported earlier, the US announced the largest sanctions imposed aimed at making North Korea disarm its missile and nuclear weapons programs.
According to the data reported by the US Treasury, 27 entities or companies, 28 vessels, and one person are subject to sanctions.
Shipping and energy companies based in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore are on the sanctions list for allegedly doing business with North Korea's regime led by Kim Jong-un. China is actually North Korea's biggest trading partner and the only major ally.
However, in January, both countries' trade fell to the lowest level after the resolution of sanctions from the UNSC.
