Becoming a NASA astronaut is the dream of many people. It takes great struggle and sacrifice to realize these ideals.
The first requirement that astronaut candidates must meet are: US citizenship, outstanding college graduates in science, mechanical engineering, or math, as well as having a flying hours riding a plane for three years or 1000 hours.
After that, applicants must pass through various selection processes that NASA claims 74 times heavier than the Harvard University entrance test. Opportunities become very small considering recruitment is not done every year. Based on records in 2017, NASA received only 12 of the 18300 registrants to join as members.
Although difficult to penetrate, NASA offers a quite tempting fee for astronauts. If measured by the magnitude of risk, it is appropriate that an astronaut receives a high fee.
Based on a question and answer page on the NASA website, astronauts are known to receive different annual salaries. The amount of income is based on skill, experience, and academic achievement during education.
The criteria are divided into several levels from GS-12 to GS-15. From each level it is subdivided into 10 different levels based on annual work performance.
"The categories of astronauts are based on their academic achievements and experiences," NASA wrote on its website.
The personnel personnel affairs are fully regulated by the United States Personnel Board or The US Office of Personnel Management. They are the ones that determine how much money NASA employees are making including astronauts every year.
Based on OPM scale in 2018, astronauts at GS-12 level 1 will receive a fee of US $ 63600 or Rp 863 million. If converted into monthly wages, then receive money of Rp 71 million per month.
While astronauts predicate GS-12 level 10, with increasing experience and expertise, they will be rewarded with a salary worth US $ 82,680 per year, or Rp 93.5 million per month.
For astronauts with GS-13 levels, the spacecraft in Phase 1 and Phase 3 can each receive an annual salary of US $ 75,628 (Rp 1.02 billion) and USD 98.317 (Rp 1.3 billion).
Even so, NASA astronauts will not stop at GS-13 level, they can continue their career to the highest level, namely GS-15 level 10.
By adjusting to their positions, responsibilities, and performance, the astronauts who are already at that level can receive up to US $ 120,000 (Rp 1.6 billion) per year, or approximately Rp 135 million per month.
